Missed the Boat
Today I was supposed to be on a pelagic expedition out of Freeport seeing wonderful new life birds like skuas and jaegers. Instead I’m sitting at home blogging and clearing old email. It seems the seas were too high for safety–5-9 foot swells and 10-15 knot winds–so the captain called off the trip. The next New York trip isn’t till December. I’ve already done a winter trip this year so I’ll probably skip that one. Maybe there’ll be another trip next September.
Pelagic expeditions are lots of fun when they go. However of the five I’ve signed up for, three have been canceled at the last minute. That’s not great odds. I’d love to do a West Coast pelagic out of Monterey Bay. Maybe the weather’s a little more predictable out there. Their season seems to run from August through October. All my West Coast birding gets done around conferences I speak at so I can afford the trip. Anyone need an XML/Java/Testing speaker/trainer those months?

Hey, that’s why they call it the Pacific.
